The Boston Homes for the Brave Initiative is hosting a special fundraising event, Boston Homes for the Brave Cut-a-Thon, on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mackie’s Barber Shop in Milton, MA. The Cut-a-Thon has been organized by Milton residents Kenneth & Sharon Pariser and Milton businesswoman Marianne “Mackie” Colligan, proud parents of two members of the United States Armed Forces. Through event sponsorships, donations, contributions from merchants in the Town of Milton, and proceeds from every haircut during the event, the Cut-a-Thon will help raise critical funds to support ending veteran homelessness in Boston.

In partnership with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, the young adult leaders of the Leadership Development Program (LDP) of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance (MHSA) held Unaccompanied Youth Homelessness Advocacy Day at the Massachusetts State House on Thursday, October 29, 2015. Legislators and state leaders were invited to listen to young adults as they shared stories of their personal experiences with homelessness and their perspectives about what must be done to end youth homelessness. Young adults and advocates also shared updates on current state initiatives to address youth homelessness. The event was hosted by Representative Jim O’Day, Senate Majority Leader Harriette Chandler, Representative Kay Khan, and Senator Jason Lewis.

Today Governor Deval Patrick announced the launch of the first-in-the-nation Pay for Success (PFS) initiative to reduce chronic individual homelessness. This innovative form of financing relies on up-front funds from private investors to expand permanent supportive housing in Massachusetts. If the program is successful, the private investors will be paid back with public dollars.

The Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance (MHSA) announced today the launch of a new permanent supportive housing program for LGBTQ unaccompanied homeless young adults. The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates that anywhere from 20 percent to 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. MHSA’s pilot program will provide 32 units of permanent supportive housing for LGBTQ young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 in Greater Boston and Western Massachusetts. MHSA will subcontract with three service providers for this initiative: the Youth on Fire program of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts in Cambridge, DIAL/SELF Youth & Community Services in Greenfield, and Justice Resource Institute (JRI) in Boston.
