The Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2018 Hearst Health Prize for Excellence in Population Health for MHSA’s Home & Healthy for Good (HHG) program. The Hearst Health Prize, in partnership with Jefferson College of Population Health, is given in recognition of an individual's or organization's outstanding achievement in managing or improving health in the U.S. The winner will be announced on March 20, 2018, at the 18th annual Population Health Colloquium.

The Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) honored United Health Foundation, Commissioner Joan Mikula of the Department of Mental Health and Jayms Battaglia of University Lutheran Church / Harvard Square Homeless Shelter at the 2017 MHSA Annual Meeting. The event, which took place at Boston College Club, celebrated the honorees’ outstanding contributions to ending homelessness and highlighted innovative solutions that reduce public reliance on emergency resources.

Mathematica Policy Research has released a new study that demonstrates how the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) is developing Housing First best practices through a triage and assessment tool. The tool identifies and targets homeless high utilizers of emergency services through a triage score. MHSA provides this score to its statewide Pay for Success providers to prioritize placing individuals into housing as units become available. This improves targeting of resources to the neediest and most vulnerable in the homeless population.

The Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) will honor Jay Cashman of Jay Cashman, Inc. with the “Bob Ray Partnership Award” at MHSA’s 14th Annual Spring Fundraising Event, “Home for Good: Solutions Start Here.” The event will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Boston. The evening will feature an award presentation with a cocktail reception serving hearty hors d’oeuvres. The event will also include a silent auction and raffle prizes, where guests can bid on a weekend getaway to Martha’s Vineyard or win tickets to see the Boston Red Sox from behind home plate.

The Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) honored Secretary Marylou Sudders, Executive Office of Health and Human Services, and Timothy Driscoll of South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) at the 2016 MHSA Annual Meeting. The event was held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Boston College Club in Boston. The Annual Meeting included a special announcement by Bernadette Di Re, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Massachusetts, who presented a $1.7 million partnership grant from United Health Foundation for the new Hospital to Housing initiative. Former New England Patriot Jerod Mayo, Senior Vice President, Business Development of UnitedHealth Group’s Optum business, was also on hand to present the “Ed O’Neil Award.”

The first-in-the-nation Pay for Success initiative to reduce chronic individual homelessness in Massachusetts has successfully placed over 250 individuals in stable, supportive housing, exceeding the minimum goal set by the Commonwealth for its first year by over 50 individuals and paving the way for significant cost savings in emergency room and inpatient care. The Pay for Success initiative being implemented by the Massachusetts Alliance for Supportive Housing (MASH) for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts focuses on providing permanent, low-threshold supportive housing to those who would otherwise rely on costly emergency resources, enabling them to address their often complex health issues more effectively than they would on the streets or in shelters.
