Meet Rene
Rene is a mother, grandmother and a sister. She loves relaxing in the living room of her Chelsea home.
She cooks in her kitchen all the time. Her favorite recipe? Peach cobbler. She has tables full of plants that she tends to daily. She has great relationships with her neighbors. Things are going well.
But, Rene’s life hasn’t been easy. After experiencing major trauma, she self medicated and it felt like she became someone else. For a long time, her life was chaotic.
After hitting rock bottom, she spent two cold November nights on the street with only a light jacket. It was then that she went to a homeless shelter - somewhere she never thought she’d end up.
After staying at the shelter for awhile, she discovered the MHSA Housing First program Journey to Success.
Journey to Success moves homeless individuals into homes of their own with support services to help stabilize their lives.
The first thing Rene did when she moved into her own place was hang a piece of artwork that reads There’s No Place Like Home.
Her home is filled with framed photos of her family. She cares for her three grandchildren with a grandmother’s love. Often, Rene returns to the shelter to give others hope and encouragement.
Rene is proud of her new life. And we at MHSA couldn’t be more proud that we helped make it happen for her.
Please make a gift to MHSA today so that together, we can help more people like Rene begin their journeys to success.
